"The guaranteed rights of the people to bear arms have been trampled under foot"

"On the 30th, the Convention selected Gov. Hortatio Seymour, of New York, as permanent President. He said there were reasons why the Democratic party should be restored to power. The Administration now in power, he asserted, cannot save the Union if it would. It has placed obstacles in its way which it cannot overcome. It has hampered its own freedom of action by unconstitutionalties. The guaranteed rights of the people to bear arms have been trampled under foot up to the very borders of Canada, so that American servitude is put in bold contrast with British liberty."
