"who took up arms in self defence"

TEMPEST IN A TEAPOT.--To judge by the Springfield Journal, and the Chicago Tribine despatches a furious insurrection against the authority of the government has broken out in Greene and Scott counties in this State. The whole "copper head" (meaning Democratic) party in those counties, according to these authorities, had risen in arms to exterminate not only a squad of soldiers hunting recruits in that region, but to slay all the loyal people. It turns out, as usual, that some U.S. soldiers, under pretense of hunting deserters, had been guilty of outrages against the citizens, who took up arms in self defence.
