1722: "and every gun, pistole, sword, cutlace, or other offensive weapon, which shall be found in the hand or custody of any slave, not qualified to keep or carry the same, as aforesaid, shall be forfeited to the finders, who are hereby empowered to seize and keep the same to their own use, without further law or process.”

Statutes at Large of South Carolina, “Provided also, that no slave who
shall be possessed of such gun, shall lend such gun to any other slave
whatsoever; and every gun, pistole, sword, cutlace, or other offensive
weapon, which shall be found in the hand or custody of any slave, not
qualified to keep or carry the same, as aforesaid, shall be forfeited to
the finders, who are hereby empowered to seize and keep the same to
