In response to letter to editor in The Free Lance-Star

Ran across some commentary from an article, (linked in Headline), posted on Keep and Bear Arms. Having studied World War II in depth, I felt it necessary to reply. Following is an expanded commentary on my response left on KABA:
.
In response to 'Armed German citizens wouldn't have stopped Hitler' by James Good (4/5/2006)
.
He is incorrect about Germany and the rise of the Nazi's. They were in the middle of a horrid depression. Living in complete economic collapse. The Treaty of Versailles played the biggest role in bringing on WWII, which basically was just a continuation of WWI. Hitler and others sensed an opportunity in the chaos and seized upon it. The Nazi's used deception from the beginning. They became masters of it.

.
The German people were starving to death. And the Weimer Republic, the government prior to the Nazi's, was in extreme disarray. Hitler capitalized on the horrible conditions. He and his cronies mastered propaganda and lies to achieve power. He duped the German people into following the Nationalsozialist, (Nazi), party. And, big money/industry backed Hitler all the way.

.
At first, in many ways it appeared Hitler and the Nazi's were good for Germany. Hitler not only fooled the Germans, but much of the rest of the world as well. Including many Americans, such as Charles Lindbergh for instance, who was an admirer of the 'Fuhrer'. In fact Hitler was 'Man of The Year' in TIME Magazine's Jan. 2, 1939 issue.
.
One of the main tools/ploys used was 'patriotism'. Part of that was to make out that the Nordic race was superior and anyone non-Aryan was sub-human. In fact, the Japanese were declared 'Honorary Aryan's' to be accepted into the Axis. Heinrich Himmler used this theme to the fullest. He built, which was at the time, the ultimate ruthless and feared fighting force - the SS. Which thrived on ancient ritual mysticism. These turned into some of the most barbaric warriors in recent history. It would be difficult to figure the exact number of deaths that could be attributed directly to Himmler and his SS. But it is in the millions.
.
Guns in the hands of citizens could very well of had an effect. It certainly did in the Warsaw ghetto as well as the partisan movement. The citizen resistance in Russia wrecked havoc on the Nazi war machine's supply line. The resistance did 'hit and run' campaigns. Killing individual and small groups of soldiers, taking their weapons and ammunition. This made them stronger and the Nazi's weaker. If not for the French resistance, D-Day may have been very different. For they assisted in a number of ways and fed the Allies pertinent info. As well as disrupted communications and supply lines.

.
To put it plainly, arms in the hands of regular citizens played a very big role in harming the Nazi war machine.
.
That the world hasn't learned the lessons taught by the likes of Hitler, Mao and Stalin, is incomprehensible. More than that, it's despicable.
.
He is incorrect on Amendment II as well. As stated in the preamble of The Bill of Rights:

.
"The Conventions of a number of the States having, at the time of adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added, and as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government will best insure the beneficent ends of its institution;"

.
DECLARATORY clause: "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state,"

.
RESTRICTIVE clause: "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

.
"The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, and this without any qualification as to their condition or degree, as is the case in the British government." - St. George Tucker, Blackstone's Commentaries

.
St. George Tucker should know what he was talking about - he was there.

.
It would be wise for James to study history a little more thoroughly, before making such statements in error. If he doesn't want to Keep and Bear arms, fine. But don't hold out incorrect theories to, in effect, try to negate other U.S. citizens Right to do so!
